The 3 Types of CBD Explained

Whether you have considered using CBD to treat a particular illness/ condition, or have thought about adding it to your daily routine to improve your over-all health and well-being, you probably have some questions about which type of CBD to use. I’m posting the basic definition of each type/category of CBD; it gives you a foundation to start with when deciding what products to use.

There are 3 terms used to categorize the Hemp extracts/CBD oils. These terms are:

  • FULL SPECTRUM
  • BROAD SPECTRUM
  •  ISOLATE

Full Spectrum CBD Products are derived from the entire hemp plant. This means using the roots, stems, stalks, flowers, and leaves;  the oil is extracted from it all. This method leaves you with a full spectrum of cannabinoids (CBD, CBG, CBN, THC etc.), Terpenes (ie: Limonene, Mycene), and Photo-chemicals such as Chlorophyll and other organic plant matter. The resulting oil will be dark in color and have a strong “hemp-ish” taste. This type of CBD will also contain low levels (0.3% or less) of THC.

Broad Spectrum CBD products are created from the same process, using the entire plant. The difference is that after extraction, the THC compound is separated and removed completely. This process still produces a CBD oil with a wide range of cannabinoids, as well as other beneficial compounds. A true Broad Spectrum product will have no trace amounts of THC.

Isolates are just that; a single isolated compound from the plant. Using a critical CO2 extraction process, manufacturers remove the oils, chlorophyll plant material, and all other compounds and are left with a 99% pure CBD product.

Keep in mind….

When deciding which CBD product to use, keep in mind, if you are in a situation that requires you to have a drug screen (ie: job, court), but you still want the benefits of a wide range of cannabinoids, terpenes etc, you can opt to go with quality Broad Spectrum CBD products. It is a good idea to view the products COA, to verify that there is no THC within the product(s) that you want to use.  Also, as with any product that you consider adding to your routine, it is important that your first speak to your primary physician before you begin using CBD, as it may interact with some prescription medications. If used properly, there are many health benefits in using CBD. It is most important that a high quality CBD product is used; there are a lot of mislabeled products out there on the market today.
